Notes comprising a detailed commentary on the first edition of Montesquieu's book De l'Esprit des Loix (1748). With this are notes by Pierre Louis Chaillou on the 1795 edition of De l'Esprit des Loix; notes by Chaillou on Rousseau's book Le Contrat Social; notes by Chaillou on the English revolution of 1688; a letter from Chaillou's brother to Felix Vatar, dated March 14, 1807, about Chaillou's papers; and notes on Montesquieu in an unidentified hand. The letter by Chaillou's brother explains that most of the manuscript of La Chalotais's commentary on De l'Esprit des Loix is in La Chalotais's own hand, while some of the rest was dictated by La Chalotais to his secretary.
